Discussion for 30th November

Image
Tonight's discussion is led by Vanessa Chamberlin. She writes:   I've been trying to convince myself to look at an Advent related passage this evening, but can find no inspiration for it...sorry! Instead we are going to look at a passage that I feel personally in the grip of at the moment...(Matt 26:1-16)...'what did Jesus mean by saying 'you have the poor with you always''...'why did he describe a woman pouring a jar of expensive oil over him as the 'good work'? In a time of global crisis, where unemployment is set to sky rocket and levels of depression and despair will presumably follow, might there be practical wisdom and hopeful guidance for our own 'work' in this passage? Why was it important to Jesus that her story be told 'wherever the gospel is preached', and why does that rarely (if ever) happen? Would the message be very different if it did? And why is this the story that is told just before Jesus turns to walk towards Jerus...

Discussion for 9th November

Tonight's discussion concentrates on Mark 8 : 27- 30. " Who do you say I am ? It is also found in both Matthew and Luke and surely forms the basis for all that was to follow in terms of Christian thinking about the man Jesus. Why did Jesus feel the need to ask, why not tell? Why did he seem to insist on an almost blanket of secrecy about the answer given? And as 21st century Unitarians, trying to cement or grow our presence on the religious/spiritual landscape, what place for the man Jesus? Who do we say he is or was? Discussion, hopefully a lively and thought provoking one tonight from 6.30 led by Rev Mike O'Sullivan Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7821543764... Discussion for 2nd November

Topic for discussion at 6.30 pm on Monday 2nd November: Mark 8:22-25. led by Bill Darlison. The healing of the blind man. 'I see men, but they look like walking trees' This is one of my favourite passages in the whole Bible! Points to consider: a. Why do you think this miracle is only recorded by Mark? Why do Matthew and Luke not report it? b. What (if any) is the significance of this 'two-stage' healing? c. How is this passage related to earlier passages - particularly Mk 7 24-47 (The Gentile Woman and 'Be Open!') d. Does this story have any relevance today?
