Discussion for 26th November

Image
Our next bible discussion on   Monday 26th October @ 6.30pm   will be a follow-up to the session where we explored our responses to ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. This time we’ll consider the well-known words:   “Ask, and it will be given unto to you; seek and you shall find; knock, and the door will be opened unto you” and 2 parables of Jesus on the need for perseverance in prayer: Luke ch.11 v. 5-13, and Luke ch. 18 v. 1-8 A few questions you might like to consider in advance: Do you pray? Why/why not? What do you make of petitionary / intercessory prayer? In your experience does prayer ‘work’? If so, in what way? What about when prayers go unanswered? How does this impact on your beliefs? N.B. A follow-up to Natalie’s discussion about women in the early church will be rescheduled in the near future. Sheena Gabriel is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. Topic: Unitarian Bible Discussion Time: Oct 26, 2020 06:30 PM Greenwich Mean Time Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/8706409760

Discussion for Monday 19th October

T his week's session is led by Arek. He writes: I would like to invite you for a lighthearted discussion on John 2:1-11: Wedding at Cana - Jesus turns water into wine. This is probably one of the best known miracles of Jesus and a subject of many jokes and references in the popular culture. But, as always, there are many different threads to this story... Where do you see yourself in this story? Which of the characters can you identify with? Did Jesus’ initial response to his mother’s request puzzle you? Is there any symbolism that you find particularly interesting? What is this story about for you? Remember- there are no right or wrong answers! It is a discussion after all, not a lecture Mill Hill Chapel is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. Discussion for Monday 12th October

This Monday's discussion is on Psalm 137 and will will be led by Bob Janis Dillon.  He writes:  "By the waters of Babylon, where we sat and wept..."  Psalm 137 contains a few lines of the most beautiful poetry in world literature...and ends with one of the most harrowing images you'll find anywhere. Are some of the psalms too abhorrent to be appreciated? If we let them, what do these lines stir in us, the 21st century reader? Come for an open discussion of this text of longing and angst. All welcome. Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83201065774?pwd=M1dOVzVJdzY5TC9qY0xpMFJGZ0pLUT09 Meeting ID: 832 0106 5774 Passcode: 117664

Discussion for Monday 5th October

Please join us at 6.30pm on Monday 5 October, when Natalie will be leading a discussion exploring  New Testament texts that have been used against women - to subordinate and harm them. We will examine some of the following themes and verses, as time allows. (We’re unlikely to read and discuss all of them directly during our hour together, but you are encouraged to familiarise yourself with as many of them as possible beforehand) : • Women were created for men; the husband is head of the wife: 1 Corinthians 11: 3, 8-9 • Women should be submissive and subject to men: Ephesians 5:22-24, Colossians 3:18, Titus 2:4-5 * Women should not teach, speak in church or have authority over a man: 1 Timothy 2:11-15, 1 Corinthians 14:33-35 • Women should be chaste, gentle, quiet (silent even) and unadorned, with long, covered hair: 1 Peter 3:1-7, 1 Corinthians 11:4-6 As Unitarians, we affirm the equal worth of all human beings, regardless of gender (or any other attribute) - and so we will ask: What r
