Discussion for 30th May

Image
Monday 30th May 6:30pm. Reading chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes can really challenge our faith, certainly with regards to the matter of life beyond death. Yet read alongside the likes of John chapter 3 it can help us shape our understanding and force us to answer some difficult questions. So Monday evening we'll take a look at Ecclesiastes 3, discuss the questions that it raises about eternal life and hopefully get some answers. Discussion for Monday 16th May

Bible Discussion Group for Monday 16th May 6.30 pm Led by Sheena Gabriel Manna (‘Bread’) from Heaven - Exodus chapter 16 This session is prompted by a recent UCA service where Francis Elliot Wright offered the story of the Israelites being fed with ‘manna’ in the wilderness - for 40 years - after fleeing Egypt. Leaving aside the intriguing notion of what ‘manna’ might be, and the historicity (or otherwise) of this passage, we will ponder together the following questions: What can it teach us about providence, and trust that our needs will be provided? What does it say about gratitude and ingratitude? How have we been ‘fed’ during our own wilderness times? In the story, however much or little manna each person gathers, they end up with the same amount. What does this say about equality and the sharing of provisions? What does the prohibition on hoarding the manna, and sufficiency for the day, mean for us (and how does it link with Jesus’ words in the Gospels)? How might the prohib...

Discussion for May 9th

This Monday's discussion will be led by Kevin Mason. He writes: Staying Alive. John 6:51-63.      At a recent Bible discussion group, the question was raised as to how we keep our faith alive.  There are parallels between the physical and the spiritual life, for both we need to do a couple of fundamental things: we need to eat and drink for instance.  Jesus talks about this in John’s gospel chapter 6.  There was much misunderstanding between those who were listening to him.  What did Jesus mean when he said we must eat his flesh and drink his blood?  The right answer to that question gives us an important means by which we can keep our faith alive.       Beware though, lest we become spiritual couch potatoes.  We are warned of this in James 1:22.  So how do we do that; be doers of the word?  In other words, how do we exercise our faith?  Join Zoom Meeting Monday 9th May at 6.30pm-7.30pm https:...

Discussion for 25th April

Image
Bible Discussion Group for Monday 25th April 2022 6.30 pm - led by Rob Oulton ‘ Have you (ever) been born again?’ This evening’s Bible passage is  John, Chapter 3, v. 1-21  which describes the Pharisee Nicodemus’ visit to Jesus by night. Jesus tells him that to see the Kingdom of God, a person must be ‘born again’ or perhaps ‘born from above’. With its connotations of emotional ‘Billy Graham’ type conversion experiences, ‘Being Born Again’ can see Unitarians running for the hills. But this passage addresses the deep mystery of how we change - our ideas, our minds, our spirituality, our beliefs. What can we find in this passage that speaks to our own spiritual and psychological journeys? How does it help us understand more deeply the significance and cost of being ‘re-born’? Can we be re-born as Unitarians? Other helpful passages could be 1 Corinthians ch. 2 on life in the Spirit, or 1 Peter ch.1 v 22/23, (the only other passage that uses specifically the idea of being ‘re-born...
