Discussion for Monday 16th May

Bible Discussion Group for Monday 16th May 6.30 pm Led by Sheena Gabriel

Manna (‘Bread’) from Heaven - Exodus chapter 16
This session is prompted by a recent UCA service where Francis Elliot Wright offered the story of the Israelites being fed with ‘manna’ in the wilderness - for 40 years - after fleeing Egypt. Leaving aside the intriguing notion of what ‘manna’ might be, and the historicity (or otherwise) of this passage, we will ponder together the following questions:
What can it teach us about providence, and trust that our needs will be provided?
What does it say about gratitude and ingratitude?
How have we been ‘fed’ during our own wilderness times?
In the story, however much or little manna each person gathers, they end up with the same amount. What does this say about equality and the sharing of provisions?
What does the prohibition on hoarding the manna, and sufficiency for the day, mean for us (and how does it link with Jesus’ words in the Gospels)?
How might the prohibition on gathering manna on the Sabbath be relevant for our own lives?
Come prepared to grapple with universal truths wrapped up in ancient scripture!
