Discussion on Monday 7th of August at 6.30pm led by Rev Peter Godfrey

Rev Peter Godfrey writes:

My subject for our discussion Monday, 7th. August is the story of Martha and Mary in Luke's Gospel chapter 10 verses 38 to 42.  Interestingly Martha and Mary also appear in John's Gospel chapter 11. Following our usual pattern I suggest that in the first of the group sessions we consider such questions as 'Was Jesus too severe on Martha?'  It was her house. Also - What did Jesus mean by 'only one thing' that he deemed necessary?  You may, perhaps, prefer the reading that 'other ancient authorities' are said to have viz 'few things are necessary, or only one'.

In part two we could consider what the story might mean for us personally with such questions as 'Is it an either/or issue?'  How do we find a balance between the spiritual and physical or practical in our daily lives?  Are the two inextricably bound in our lives?  Is the division arbitrary, just for the convenience of talking about them?

I hope this is plenty to go on.  As usual I shall be grateful for others to add appropriate details about how to get in to the zoom and arranging such things as the division into groups.

Greetings to all

Luke 10:38  As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feetlistening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
