Bible Talk this Friday: On BABEL and PENTECOST: FINDING a COMMON LANGUAGE for OUR TIME

“On BABEL and PENTECOST: FINDING a COMMON LANGUAGE for OUR TIME”

Sheena Gabriel will lead our talk for Pentecost on Friday 21st May N.B EARLIER START TIME 7.30pm.

“That is why it is called Babel, because the Lord there made a babble of the language of all the world. From that place the Lord scattered them all over the face of the earth.” (Genesis ch. 11)
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other tongues as the Spirit gave them power of utterance… At this sound the crowd gathered, all bewildered because each one heard their own language spoken.” (Acts ch. 2)
Raised in the Pentecostal church, Sheena has a special interest in the story of Pentecost - having done a bit of tongue speaking in her time! She can’t promise to give a demonstration of ‘glossolalia‘, but hopes to offer some insight into the phenomena - and unpack the significance of two stories from Hebrew and Christian scripture, which speak to the human struggle to communicate across diverse cultures, and within our own spiritual communities. She invites you to come with minds and hearts ready to ‘wrestle’ truth from ancient sources - reminding us that scripture can be read on at least 4 levels: literal, allegorical, moral and mystical.
